The Joan Waddell Beavis and Anne Beavis Award

This award is in honour of Joan Waddell Beavis and her daughter, Anne Beavis and their strong ties to public education in Ottawa, and to their alma mater, Queen’s University.

The Waddell and Beavis families have a long history with both the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and Queen’s University. Members of every generation of the Waddell family have attended Queen’s University beginning with the Rev. Dr. Arpad Govan (B.A., 1883). Many family members including Anne Beavis have also taught within the OCDSB beginning with Thomas Kenneth Waddell at Glebe Collegiate in the 1920’s and his brother, Donald Waddell at Lisgar Collegiate in the 1930’s.

Purpose of the Award

The Joan Waddell Beavis and Anne Beavis Award is presented annually to a graduating student at Lisgar Collegiate, Glebe Collegiate, or Canterbury High School who has achieved a high level of proficiency in the area of the Fine Arts, English, Mathematics, or Geography and demonstrates the character and academic potential to succeed in their post-secondary studies at Queen’s University in one of the above disciplines. The 2024 Award will go to a student at Glebe High School.

Eligibility

All graduating students at Lisgar Collegiate, Glebe Collegiate, or Canterbury High School who are pursuing post-secondary education at Queen’s University are eligible for this award.

Criteria for Selection of Winner

  1. Students at OCDSB must attend Lisgar, Glebe, or Canterbury
  2. The award is to be rotated between the 3 schools for simplicity
  3. Will be in one of the following programs: Fine Arts Undergraduate Program, English, Mathematics, Geography
  4. Attending Queen’s University

Judging

No application required. OCDSB staff from OTSS and Sir Guy Carleton to select recipient and notify the Education Foundation of Ottawa.

Award

One (1) Joan Waddell Beavis and Anne Beavis Award of $1000.00 will be given to the recipient.
