Lorne and Margaret Trudeau Education Award

*Application link found below*

The Lorne and Margaret Trudeau Education Award was created in honour of Lorne and Margaret, and their desire to pay forward the benefits they received from a university education. Lorne Trudeau was a World War II veteran who, upon returning from the war, was only able to attend university because of the government education funding awarded to war veterans. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics and later obtained a Master’s degree in his field. Margaret Trudeau put herself through nursing school in Nova Scotia. They grew up during the depression of the 1930s, and knew financial struggles, but were able to overcome these challenges because of a good education, hard work and careful attention to expenses.

Purpose of the Award

The Lorne and Margaret Trudeau Education Award was created to give the opportunity for a university education to a very talented student who would not otherwise be able to attend due to the cost. This award is designed to cover the expenses for four years of university in Canada to support the student during their undergraduate degree in engineering, natural sciences, or nursing. The award includes tuition, books, a campus food program, and, if applicable, contributions to the cost of residence or rental housing.

*The successful student is expected to apply for other grants available to post-secondary students.

The successful student must pass their university courses each year and will be asked annually to allow the Education Foundation of Ottawa to verify their registration and grades with the post secondary institution.

Eligibility

The award is intended for one very talented student who is highly motivated but would not otherwise be able to afford to attend university. Eligibility includes an OCDSB grade 12 student who:

  • should have at least B+ (75-80%) in all classes. Consideration may be given to students who have participated in extra-curricular activities that may result in lower marks, but better all round experience;
  • is interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering, natural sciences or nursing;
  • is a Canadian citizen;
  • is eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program Grant (OSAP) by completing the application process and providing to the Education Foundation of Ottawa evidence of OSAP acceptance before the award funds are disbursed;
  • provides a letter of recommendation from an educator with the OCDSB.

The selection will be based on marks, extra-curricular activities, financial need, the recommendation letter as provided by the OCDSB educator, and an essay of up to 1,000 words from the student describing their education goals, and how the award will help them achieve those goals.

Criteria for Selection of Winner

Applications will be reviewed by the Trudeau family and applicants selected for further review will be contacted.
